Signs You Have a Leak on Your Hands
How do you know when you have a pool leak? You don’t need a specialized pool leak detector to realize there’s a problem. Look for the following signs of a leak, and if you notice one or more problems, get in touch with the team at Patriot Pool & Spa:
- Algae growth in the pool
- Rusting or corroded pipes
- Loose pool tiles
- Dirt blown into the pool
- Visible cracks in the deck
- Increasing water bills
- Changes in water level
- Wet spots in the yard
- Standing water around pool equipment
How to Check for a Pool Leak
We understand that calling for a pool inspection is a last resort for most homeowners. Luckily, there are a few ways you can check for a leak on your own. Try these two types of DIY pool leak detection methods and let us know if you find a problem:
Bucket Test
To do the bucket test, all you need is a 5-gallon bucket and a marker or piece of duct tape. First, you’ll place the empty bucket on the second step of your pool. Fill the bucket to match the water level around the second step, and mark it using the marker or duct tape. Next, turn off the pump, wait 24 hours, and compare water levels. Depending on your results, here’s what to do next:
- If the pool and bucket have gone down but are still even—evaporation is causing your pool to lose water.
- If the pool’s water level is lower than the bucket—a leak is the likely culprit.
- To narrow down the source of the leak—repeat the test with the pump on, and if water loss is greater, you probably have a leak somewhere in the filter system or plumbing.
Dye Test
If your goal is to find the exact location of a leak, you’ll want to do the dye test. All you’ll need is some leak finder dye and waterproof tape for marking potential sources of the leak. Here’s how to complete the dye test:
- Identify wetness on the ground or walls around the pool and mark places where it shouldn’t be damp
- Turn off the pump
- Squeeze dye close to the water’s surface and near a wall
- Mark any areas the leak detection dye moves toward
What Caused the Leak?
Knowing why a leak occurred is often instrumental in addressing the problem. Once you know the “why,” you can take steps to prevent additional issues in the future. Below, you’ll find the most common causes of pool leaks:
Broken Pipes
Broken pipes are a leading cause of pool leaks. Unfortunately, the leaky pipe isn’t always easy to find. Nevertheless, you can rest assured that the Patriot Pool & Spa team is on the case. We’ll evaluate your complex plumbing system and check all of the following areas:
- Skimmer pipe
- Main drain
- Equalizer line
- Return pipes
Cracked Fittings
Even a small crack in the pipe fittings can lead to a costly leak. At the first sign of broken, loose, or otherwise damaged fittings, get in touch with the professionals at Patriot Pool & Spa.
Damage to Plumbing
If something is amiss with your plumbing, the issue can greatly affect your pool or spa. You’ll need a professional to identify the underground leak and suggest a fix. Don’t wait for the problem to go away on its own! Leaving the issue unaddressed will only lead to more damage and more money spent.
Mechanical Problems
Leaks can occur due to mechanical problems with the pump. You may first notice this issue when you get your next water bill—if it’s much higher than normal, you may be dealing with a mechanical problem.
Major Structural Issues
If there’s significant structural damage to your pool or spa, it only makes sense that a leak is about to follow. Cracks in the concrete or fiberglass around the pool can indicate a serious structural issue that requires professional attention right away.
